High Speed Rail and BIM

This article explores the potential use of BIM on high-speed rail (HSR) projects, in the wake of the formal launch of California’s planned High Speed Rail initiative, and explores whether we can expect the use of BIM to significantly lower the cost of new HSR projects than those implemented in the pre-BIM era. It looks at the current status of HSR projects around the globe, at the software available for rail design and construction in general, and finally, at the implementation of BIM in more recent HSR projects.

Integration of BIM with Facility Systems to Support HVAC Troubleshooting

This article by Dr. Semiha Ergan, an Assistant Professor at New York University, Polytechnic School of Engineering in Civil and Urban Engineering Department, describes a recent project that she led with her student, Xue Yang, now a 360BIM consultant at Autodesk, to address the challenges HVAC mechanics face when troubleshooting HVAC related problems. They have developed a data schema that extends IFC and integrates as-built BIM, BAS (Building automation system), and CMMS (Computerized maintenance management system) data required for troubleshooting in a single repository which can be used by HVAC mechanics instead of going back and forth between FMS archives, command centers, and facility floors to get access to the facility/system specific information they need.

AEC Technology Updates: Design and Analysis Applications

This article is the second of the two-part article series capturing the key AEC technology updates in the last six to seven months. While the first article, published last week, looked at the updates related to construction and facilities management applications, the updates related to building design and analysis applications are explored in this article, including Graphisoft’s BIMx Pro, Nemetschek’s Allplan, 4M’s IntelliCAD-based BIM suite, the new MEPdesigner for SketchUp from Trimble, ArchiCAD add-ons from the Cadimage Group, Revit Express tools from CTC, Trelligence Affinity, Sefaira Systems, IESVE, and BIMcollab for the new field of issue management in BIM.

AEC Technology Updates: Construction and FM Applications

This article captures the key semi-annual updates of the main developments related to construction and facilities management applications in the AEC technology industry, including new releases such as Trimble ProjectSight, a cloud-based solution for construction field management; AllTrak Cloud and Rapid Positioning System, also from Trimble, for cloud-based material asset management and site positioning and layout respectively; and Aconex Dynamic Manuals, a mobile solution for the operation and maintenance of built assets for owners and facility managers. It also looks at SmartUse, a touch-friendly mobile platform for construction project collaboration that was recently acquired by Newforma; and Conworld, a construction simulation game that can be used for training as well as actually simulating the progress on a construction site with realistic machines, realistic products, and realistic processes.

HOK’s Fifth Annual BIM Awards

This article takes a look at the some of the key projects in HOK’s 5th Annual BIM Awards competition, an internal program that HOK runs every year to draw out and highlight projects from its offices all over the world that exhibit exemplary and innovative use of BIM and integrated design. This year’s line-up included a diverse array of projects including a science and technology campus in Korea, a tourism resort in China, a residential development in India, a healthcare campus in St Louis, and a roof terrace in an office building in Washington DC. I had the privilege of serving on the jury for the competition this year, which gave me the opportunity to review all the finalist’s presentations and get an understanding of their projects. It also provides an excellent insight into the current state of the art of BIM implementation at HOK, and by extension, in the architectural profession as a whole, and raises some interesting questions about the future of BIM technology.

Autodesk University 2014

This article captures some of the news and updates from Autodesk that it shared at its recent flagship user event, Autodesk University, including the new A360 Collaboration for Revit to better support cloud-based collaboration among multiple team members working on the same model, and its new Ember 3D printer, developed as a prototype implementation for its open-source 3D printing platform, Spark. It also looks at the highlights of some of the most interesting presentations in the AEC-specific “innovation forums” at the event , including the evolution of technology implementation at HOK; the extensive use of AEC technology on Disney’s Enchanted Storybook Castle in Shanghai by Walt Disney Imagineering; an innovative robotic-enabled solution to maximize energy captured in solar installations by QBotix; and the use of digitized Lego blocks by the MIT Media Lab in city visualization, analysis, and simulation.

Bentley’s Year in Infrastructure 2014 Conference

This article provides an overview of the highlights of Bentley’s annual Year in Infrastructure conference that was held in London last month, including key technology updates from Bentley on its new CONNECT generation of software, additional presentations on different aspects of infrastructure technology by organizations and firms all over the world, and a guest keynote on the new High Speed Rail project proposed for London on which the use of BIM is being seen as the “lifeblood” of the project. The conference also included presentations of all the projects selected as finalists for the Bentley “Be Inspired” awards in different categories, which will be described in a dedicated article in the upcoming Q4 issue of AECbytes magazine.
